Level Contributor 164 posts 27 reviews 79 helpful votes No-go-Areas in Hanoi and Saigon 13 years ago As every city has its "special" areas redlight, drugs, crime, other hassle I am curious about the dodgy areas in Hanoi and Saigon to avoid them on my trip and not accidently getting in bad streets. Please let me know which areas&districts to avoid in both cities. Many thanks. Level Contributor 4,434 posts 4 reviews 7 helpful votes 1. Re No-go-Areas in Hanoi and Saigon 13 years ago Vietnam is very safe and crime against tourists other than bag-snatching is very, very rare. Obviously it's never a good idea in any city to wander around alone in the small hours but just take the usual precautions and you'll be fine. Level Contributor 164 posts 27 reviews 79 helpful votes 2. Re No-go-Areas in Hanoi and Saigon 13 years ago Unfortunately that answer doesn't really help much.... I know that travelling in Vietnam is safe generally and I'm not at all afraid of leaving my home sweet home. But.....Every city has dodgy areas, same in Hanoi and Saigon for sure......these areas are what I'm interested in. Like the northern part or SW or along the river, behind the hill, aound the xy square..... Do you live in Hanoi/Saigon ? Please kindly let me know some more details. Thanks a lot for helping. Level Contributor 4,434 posts 4 reviews 7 helpful votes 3. Re No-go-Areas in Hanoi and Saigon 13 years ago I've lived in Saigon for nearly 7 years and have never come across a dodgy area; and never found one in several trips to Hanoi either. If there are any they're way out in the outlying districts where you're hardly likely to find yourself anyway. Level Contributor 10,441 posts 50 reviews 57 helpful votes 4. Re No-go-Areas in Hanoi and Saigon 13 years ago Have to agree with ComeAndGoVietnam, if there are dodgy areas they are well out of the way. In 6 trips I cannot remember of one instance thinking I shouldn't be here and I have gone into a lot of places off the tourist road map. Not saying there aren't any but its not something I tend to dwell on but are you planning to write a book or something as I see you say that you ARE interested in them. If you want some 'fun' just hang out on a corner...they'll soon come to you. But its not a way I'd recommend. Who knows where you might end up! Level Contributor 164 posts 27 reviews 79 helpful votes 5. Re No-go-Areas in Hanoi and Saigon 13 years ago Oh no, I'm not on the hunt for some "fun". I tried to point out my interest as the general answer "everything is fine&safe in Vietnam" wasn't exactly helpful. When writing reviews or posting in the forum I try to give on-the-point information as I think is the most helpful advice and that's what I also prefer to get from fellow travellers. I would like to avoid walking onto squares or streets in the city centre with special mix of people and where "outsiders" like me are starred at. Gives an uncomfortable feeling, if you know what I mean. Level Contributor 14,956 posts 13 reviews 22 helpful votes 6. Re No-go-Areas in Hanoi and Saigon 13 years ago There are NO such streets or squares in central Hanoi, which as the others have pointed out is free of dodgy areas. As for being stared at, the locals are far too used to the presence of foreigners and far too busy with their day-to-day activities to waste time staring at you. Level Contributor 10,441 posts 50 reviews 57 helpful votes 7. Re No-go-Areas in Hanoi and Saigon 13 years ago My apologies magyar_lany , seems I got the wrong end of the stick. It is one reason I didn't post earlier,.I just couldn't think of any 'unsafe' areas that I'd seen in Saigon its where my other half lives. As long as you are not out into the small hours, it is a relatively safe environment. Level Contributor 164 posts 27 reviews 79 helpful votes 8. Re No-go-Areas in Hanoi and Saigon 13 years ago Thanks 69Bertie. Good to know to feel free in Hanoi and Saigon....and being able to , for example, concentrate on watching out for the traffic ;- Level Contributor 1,276 posts 24 reviews 37 helpful votes 9. Re No-go-Areas in Hanoi and Saigon 13 years ago If I can add my 2 cents, in my 9 and counting visits to HCMC I have never encountered a specific area with any serious concentration of the types of activities you describe. One thing you must consider is that the police in VN are among the most corrupt in the world. Even some legitimate businesses are regularly shaken down for a piece of the action. Most types of criminal activities are kept very quiet and very fragmented to avoid drawing too much police scrutiny. You, as a tourist, are most likely to never encounter a "red light" district in Saigon. Throughout VN there are many businesses that front for less savory businesses but they are never concentrated in one area. And these business are typically not very inviting for someone casually walking by. If you use your own good instincts you'll never be touched by the seamy side of Vietnam. As with any city avoid dark alleys. When walking never carry your bags or valuables on the street side of your body. Don't flash money openly. Just take the precautions you'd take when visiting any city and you'll be fine. 10.
